I love the cover, the bright blue with gold really works and gives the feeling of a magical night. Jess Kidd has cleverly mixed historical fact with fiction and supernatural elements, although I found the supernatural parts did not grip me particularly other then to show the seamier side of life below decks.
The superstitious nature of the people both aboard ship and when they were marooned was believable for the times. There is sadness and horror in the accounts and initially suspense as to whether they were going to be rescued or not. As the story was based around an actual shipwreck it made it more difficult to read and enjoy for me.
The gruesome bestial natures that developed as food etc became short was horrifying but to some extent expected as the nature of the characters were drawn out earlier in the story.
I finished the book as I rarely do not once I start. It was well written but not to my taste
