I don't mind a little bit of going backwards and then forwards in a book or even in a film, but every chapter is either in the past or the present. It's a little too much. This is two stories being told as one. A little girl in 1629 who survives a terrible fate and is stranded with others on a remote island, and then a little boy in 1989 who has recently lost his mother and is now living on a remote island with his estranged grandad. The island is the same in both stories but that is really the only connection between the two. I suppose you could count the mysterious tale of the Bullebak/Bunyip and the necklace that is a stone with a hole in it.
It took me a while to read this one, it was ok, nothing too exciting to rave about. I preferred the little boys story compared to the little girls, I think this is because the boys tale was set in a time I am more familiar with.
