Mayken and her nursemaid Imke embark for a voyage on the Batavia.
The year is 1629 and the Batavia is the most cutting edge ship of that time.
Yet things aren't all that they seem on the ship.
Strange things are happening on board, everyone can feel it yet no one knows what's going on.
The tension is reaching breaking point and the lives of all are at risk.
Then we switch to the year 1989 and meet Gil, a very troubled boy whose mother has just died so he is shipped off to live with his reclusive grandfather Joss, a fisherman on an island on the coast of Australia.
Gil is struggling, missing his mother and trying to navigate life in a new place with different people and kids who bully him as she doesn't fit it.
Both these kids are intertwined and their destiny and history bound with the present day across space and time as Gil start to learn about the Batavia and it's history and what happened on that fateful night all those years ago.
Brilliantly written with an interesting time shift persecuted.
I especially liked the character of Gil who seemed a sensitive and misunderstood boy.
Think the author did a good job of blending fact and fiction and history with modern day.
A really good story.
