I was really looking forward to reading this book. This is the first book I have read from Jessie Kidd and it was amazing.
The writing was so articulate and really made you feel like you were right there. The pacing was really slow to start and but once you get to know the characters more and familiarize with the writing style the pacing picks up.
I loved both of the main characters and stories they tell. The two perspectives were very easy to follow and written very differently as to not confuse whos perspective you're reading about, even when there are some parallel story lines and characters. I also really liked the subtle gesture towards magical realism.
I really liked how all the characters that were written about were really detailed and made you feel rather strongly about them.
The theme itself of being about the Batavia sinking was amazing, its a story I didn't know well at all and was glad to have been educated by it via this book.
This is a very well written and revised book and even though it didn't grab me right away, I'm glad I kept with it.
