Suspenseful and fascinating but a little bleak

This was a bit of a difficult read in terms of the subject matter as it was a bit challenging to keep coming back to such a dark story but the writing itself is just as good as what I've come to expect from this particular author. I thoroughly enjoyed Kidd's earlier novel Things in Jars, and this is similar in incorporating supernatural elements - my only issue (and she is one of a number of authors I've noticed with this issue lately) is the repetition of certain favourite adjectives that I would expect an editor to do a better job of catching and making sure to change. It does get a little grating after a while in terms of writing style, but without giving any of the plot away I can't fault a story that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout - the combination of mixing actual historical fact with supernatural elements was fantastic and overall an enjoyable read.
