In the 1600s Mayken boards the Batavia with her servant on a journey to find her father. Batavia was an impressive ship and it was on this voyage that things deteriorated. Mayken finds that there is another world below deck where she should not be and where secrets are not shared. The fate of this ship becomes more fragile.

In the late 1980s Gil is trying to come to terms with the death of his mother whilst in the care of his grandfather, a recluse. The lonely place they live is really no place for a young g child to come to terms with grief and Gil's behaviour gets him noticed by the wrong kind of people.

The Night Ship is about friendship, humans not taking care of each other and
also how children can adapt to new surroundings and manage to exist in a climate where others would have succumbed. The Batavia was a real ship which did not have a glorious life. I liked the way that the stories are intertwined.
