From the start of the extract, a man is presented, Jim, he is working as part of the security team in a grocery store. What I love about this setting is that we are also introduced to other characters, for example the men shopping and the woman with the book. I believe the writer has done this to take the reader away from focusing on Jim only, so that we do not get a lot of details from him. The writer cleverly introduces the man's feelings by using a range of language devices and an incredibly engaging narration style. The switch from Jim's perspective to the book is amazing. We get revealed that Jim is in fact the killer.
