Eve Black is writing the story of the Nothing Man who had killed her family some years before and Jim Doyle, aka the Nothing Man, is reading it. It's an original feeling twist on the crime and mystery genre and is nicely executed. There is no who-dunnit but the slow reuniting of two people separated by time is tense and exciting. The pace of the book is never allowed to drop despite the slow burning premise of Jim reading Eve's memoir chapter by agonising chapter and you'll speed faster and faster through to the end as the collision of past and present rushes towards you like an unstoppable rock rolling down a hill. It's an easy and enjoyable read and I'm definitely going to look out for future books from Catherine Ryan Howard.
