Gripping thriller offering a fresh insight
After reading quite a few romances recently it was nice to read a thriller; I was so glad it was The Nothing Man! I was gripped from the first chapter and found it fascinating to read a fiction book about such a brutal crime with different perspectives from both a serial killer and surprise survivor. I liked that the perspectives had both memories and present day views; I did find this slowed down the narration slightly, but it didn’t detract too much from the story.
Although we know who Jim is quite early in the book I didn’t feel as though it had a negative impact, in fact I thought it made it much more interesting, giving a fresh perspective. I loved the detail put into being able to see into the mind of Jim and found myself liking his character much more than I probably should, which I believe was down to the way in which Catherine portrayed him. Eve’s memoir is given to us as a book within the book, something I hadn’t really see before but it was interesting and I really liked it. It was a unique concept that was well executed and suiting the book well.
Overall I found the tone of the book to be appropriate for the genre, the story itself was gripping, unpredictable and fill of twists that would be expected from a great thriller. The cover matched the story well and was a nice fit. I would recommend this book for anyone that is into crime or thrillers. I rate the book 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5 for the purposes of rating. Thank you to Readers First, Catherine Ryan Howard and Corvus Books for the arc in return for my fair and honest review.
