‘I was the girl who survived the Nothing Man, now I am the woman who is going to catch him.’ Eve Black was 12 when her parents and young sister were murdered by the nothing man. She was the only survivor, as she hid in the bathroom. He was dubbed the Nothing Man as he left no evidence and no trace of himself, so the police had nothing to go on. The killer was never caught and Eve is writing a book about her experiences in the hope that he can be found. We start the story with seemingly innocent supermarket security guard Jim picking up the book and starting to read, he is clearly immediately intrigued, as he himself is the Nothing Man!

I LOVED this book. It had such a unique premise as it was a book within a book and this was done so cleverly. We start with Jim picking up Eve’s true crime memoir to read it, and then we actually read the book with him, going back to his current life when he pauses reading. I loved how this was done, with different fonts and also the author name in the top corner, together with a title page and acknowledgements for Eve’s book. Reading along with the book at the same time as Jim was such a different take on things and I thought it worked perfectly, particularly seeing Jim’s reactions as he worked through the book.

Eve wants to catch Jim, and as Jim delves deeper into her true crime novel, he realises he wants to stop her before she can! This turns in to a cat and mouse game and the tension builds up as we wait to see who wins.

This was a gripping thriller, very cleverly written and packed with tension. The only reason I did not give this five stars was because I was expecting a little bit more action in the finale, but this did not stop me enjoying it as much as I did. This is the second book I have read by this author, the first being Rewind, and I will definitely be reading the rest.
