The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard is very cleverly written as a book within a book. Eve Black's parents and sister were killed in their home by an intruder when she was just twelve years old. Her grandmother took her away, changed her name and kept her safe as she had seen the killer and there was always the worry he would try to find her. The culprit had carried out a number of attacks but the one on the Black family was the worst and the last. His way of working was to choose his victim then plan his attack, always in the middle of the night. As a young woman Eve is determined to find the killer and finally get justice for her family so she writes her book in an attempt to get to the truth and draw the killer out. The author goes between Eve's book and her account of the reaction of the killer to Eve's book and the consequences. Eve's part of the book is very chilling with descriptions of the attacks carried out by this man and, ultimately, when he comes looking for her. There can't be many things more frightening than wakening from a deep sleep to find a masked attacker at the side of the bed and Catherine Ryan Howard keeps the tension going right through this extremely well written book.
