I’m a fan of crime thrillers and although I hadn’t previously heard of Catherine Ryan Howard I wanted to give this a try as I was intrigued by the concept. I’m so glad I did!
I enjoyed the writing style, it was a very clever idea to show the victim and the killer it was like a book within a book.
The Nothing Man centres around Jim who is reading the book “The Nothing Man” Eve Black. We read her book along with him cutting from her story to narrative about Jim. Her book within the book Is laid out as a real book even comes with an acknowledgment page for example. It’s very cleverly done and really made the story for me.
Eve is the sole survivor of a vicious attack on her family by a serial Killer known as The Nothing Man when she was just 12 years old. Her book details that night along with what happened to his other victims and also recounts her life before and after.
Next we meet Jim who is a retired guard now working as a mall shop security. We listen to his life and thoughts on Eve’s book as he has a secret. He is The Nothing Man!
It’s a compelling, original read that at times is truly frightening. Well worth a read even by those that don’t normally enjoy this genre. It’s easily my favourite read of the year so far.
