The Nursery is a real page-turner of a thriller. Our hero, Lex, works for the Secret Services and her particular branch are on lock-down. They have been compromised and only Lex's team are trusted to track down the informant. As well as having a high pressure, stessful and often dangerous job, Lex is also a wife and mother to a two year old. And naturally, her family have no idea of who and what she really is.
It's excellent fun - the characters are necessarily over the top, but still manage to be believable. It is full of humour and has its tongue firmly in its cheek - particularly when Lex is dealing with some of yummy mummies and the teachers at the nursery. The plot itself isn't particularly complicated and it's reasonably obvious where it's going at times, but no matter. There are some fantastic set pieces such as when Lex is trapped and has nothing much more than the contents of her tote bag to help her escape. I can't wait to see that scene in what I hope is the inevitable film!
I didn't realise that it was the second in a series when I started it, and I had bought the first in the series before I was halfway through - the highest compliment to the author that I can give.
