As soon as I saw this book on Readers First, I knew I’d love it. The idea of a female secret agent juggling work with her home life sounded right up my street. I imagined humour and action being blended together to create a laugh out loud page turner. And blow me, I only went and won a copy of the book, hooray!!
Within the first few pages, my assumptions were confirmed, this was going to be a belter of a book! This is the second in the Lex Tyler series but FYI I haven’t read Killing It before reading this, so I can reassure you that The Nursery can be read as a standalone.
Lex and her team at Platform Eight are tasked with the most important mission of their careers – they must find out who is running a deadly website on the dark web that connects criminals to traitorous security operatives. Secrets are already being leaked that have caused both civilians and undercover agents to be killed, Lex and her team need to uncover the traitor within the intelligence services before anyone else gets hurt.
Help from another team gives them a head start on who’s next on the hit list, so they must protect China’s Minister of Commerce by all costs and discover who is behind it all.
Meanwhile at home, Gigi; Lex’s adorable two year old, is close to being thrown out of nursery for her naughty behaviour and her always late for pick up mum!
With her husband; Will, working long hours and of course, completely oblivious to what Lex does all day, their relationship is strained. With old frames coming onto the scene and new dishy co-workers, Lex has to wonder, did she pick the “one”?
This was a kick-ass read, it was fun throughout whilst also having a plot that was two steps ahead of the reader at all times.
One of my favourite aspects of this book is where the agents work – “Platform Eight”, is a disused underground network of rooms and tunnels off platform 8 at Holborn tube station. Mackay links certain phrases commonly heard in tube stations and explains the reasons behind them, i.e. to cover up the work the secret agents are doing… I LOVED this, they were hilarious and will make me giggle next time I hear them!
This book had it all, it was a cracking hybrid that combined action with day-to-day musings. It was fast paced, nail biting and also blimming funny. I was blown away by it.
Now I need to go back and read Killing It because I want another Lex fix now!
