looking at the cover of the book, i wasn't sure what to expect but the first sentence already grabbed my interest. it's really difficult to create suspense with just a few words but the first sentence alone had me really intrigued. i liked the tone of the narrator, it was familiar and casual, and i really like it when books are written that way. augusta shows that since the beginning she's wanted to escape and leave, and this makes me think that this is foreshadowing. she compares herself with her twin julia and they seem to be polar opposites, and i'm intrigued to find out more about their relationship. augusta refers to feeling trapped and suffocated in this excerpt with symbolism to the wooden doll and again, it's a theme that i think will be explored more in the book. she talks about her childhood realisation about knowledge and the depth of the world and it's quite profound, her way of thinking is advanced and she's an interesting character to read about. the introduction of parfait is intriguing because he's from burundi, the very place augusta dreams of escaping to, yet he wants to escape their too. i'm looking forward to reading on and finding out what happens, if these two characters meet and wondering what that first sentence was all about.
