I tried this book as it was recommended as the next Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. As much as I liked the character of Augusta, I found the first half rather slow as it seemed to be all about setting the scene for the tragedy that was to come. I also wasn’t so keen on how much jumping there was between Augusta and Parfait, finding myself skim reading Parfait’s narrative so I could get back to Augusta.

However, I am glad I stuck with it as it all came together in the second half as Augusta attempted to come to terms with the hand life had dealt her. I would have loved it if more of the book could have been spent on this part of the story. There were also several secondary characters I would have liked to know more about, such as the Cooks. Overall, it felt like only a small glimpse into Augusta’s world and I would loved to have been able to delve a little deeper into it.
