Augusta Hope is a person obsessed with words and language. She is a twin but is also a misfit in suburbia where she grows up. Her parents and her twin, Julia, are conventional, her father very much so. The story begins when they are born in 1998, a few minutes apart giving them different birthdays. Julia is also the prettier twin and Augusta feels is her mother's favourite. Augusta appears argumentative and pedantic at times and questions everything. She cannot wait to get away. The author describes all the different characters very well.
Augusta is drawn towards Burundi from an early age as she likes the sound and researches the country. In between chapters by Augusta there are short chapters by Parfait, a boy and then man from Burundi. As you read you feel their lives are on a collision course.
