The story starts by being introduced to Augusta, a girl living with her twin sister, mother and father in a small street in Hedley. Despite being a twin, Augusta and Julia are chalk and cheese. However, despite being so different, their bond remains close as Julia is one of the only people that accept Augusta's quirky traits.
I was brought up in a similar time to Augusta, with a sister. This meant that I felt a connection and loved reading about the bond between these siblings.

The other half of the story is from the perspective of Parfait, a young boy trying to escape the horrors of the civil war that have gripped his country, Burundi.

Both stories are extremely separate until the end, despite there being some subtle hints along the way that these two stories are destined to be intertwined.

I was intrigued that it took so long for the stories to come together, however I loved both storylines equally. I was expecting the story to all be written from Augusta's point of view so it was a pleasant surprise to have the alternate view point.

Both Augusta and Parfait are trying to escape their homes but in completely different ways and for completely different reasons. However, this similarity just cements their stories together even more.

The story was poignant, funny and heart warming at the same time and really made you understand the importance of family, being accepted in the world that you live in and that you should always follow your dreams, no matter how unachievable they may seem.
