Augusta is the youngest of twins condemned in life to come second to her sister Julia. Despite this or maybe because of this Julia’s life and hers are intrinsically linked though they have very different personalities. Julia is keen to please and diplomatic while Augusta is oppositional and academic. As she grows Augusta comes to feel that she does not belong in her family and longs for the day that she can escape what she feels are the constraints of her family and the life that is expected of her. Augusta dreams of travelling far and wide and initially becomes fascinated by the sound of the word Burundi and then to be pained by its history. When she graduates she dreams of writing a novel about Burundi.
Parfait is born in Burundi and sees his family being torn apart by the incessant racial cleansing and civil war. He wishes to escape his country but to take his family with him to Spain. This means walking across Africa before crossing the Mediterranean.
A succession of tragic events will lead to their paths crossing as both try to make sense of a life touched by tragedy and what it means to belong and to love and be loved.
