It doesn't matter if, like me, you haven't read the first Sofia Khan novel. Malik has such a talent that all becomes clear without paragraphs of boring exposition. Sofia is in Karachi, having just married Conall, her Irish boyfriend. He may be white and a recent convert to Islam, but it's Sofia who longs to return to London. From the off we realise that something's up with Conall. When he eventually confesses his secret, Sofia has to wonder if she even knows her own husband.

I love the humour of this book. Malik avoids the typical clichés of this genre of novel, and there is as much focus on Sofia's career as there is on her relationship woes. Her mother is a brilliant character, and her friends are just as much a focus as Conall and his woes. Highly recommended.
