The stakes were established early on, and in a way that felt natural. From there, the tension increased slowly, with the associated doubts and paranoia that come from recovering from something that changes the way you have to live your life. The main characters (whose names I have already forgotten, because, eh) had personalities outside of each other and their relationship, which . . . I didn't like.
The romance between the main characters was unnecessary in my opinion, and could be described as toxic due to the fact that it is very much based on an imbalance of power between the two, with the male lead literally being the female lead's carer. Also, they appear to have gotten together as a couple either while the female lead was in hospital, or immediately after she left. This side to their relationship was something that bothered me, and would likely continue to bother me had I been able to read the entire book.
But aside from an unnecessary, potentially toxic/abusive romantic relationship (why can't they have been just friends?!), it seemed like a good start to an okay book. I wouldn't describe it as great, because it doesn't jump out to me in any way, but if I was given it as a gift/it was the only book left on Earth for me to read, I wouldn't complain - and might actually end up enjoying, depending on how the rest of the story turns out.
