Both the cover and title definitely caught my eye. The title itself conveys that this will be a thriller. I didn’t think much of the cover before I read the extract. But now I realised that it is actually the beach which was mentioned in the extract. Pretty smart. I wonder if that beach will play an important role or if it just represents the beginning of the book and when Rob talks about his double.
There’s nothing much for me to comment on the characters as they have a personality and are decently developed. However, I feel like it would have been better if the author didn’t go straight into the ‘double’ concept. When Rob returns from the airport we do get a feeling that it’s not him. But, we haven’t read much of him to know his mannerisms and gestures. Therefore, the author has to prompt the readers by saying how unusual it is that Rob is suddenly doing these things that he normally doesn’t. I think it would have added to the story if the author had actually first developed on their relationship and then went straight into the doppelgänger concept so that the readers can realise (or not) what is going on and how unusual he acts all of a sudden.
I also think that this novel will be a bit predictable. Obviously a bit of the overview of a novel had to be given in the blurb to attract readers, but the foreshadowing didn’t seem subtle at all.
Other than that, the writing style flowed nicely and was put well together.
Overall, it seems like a really good book that I would be excited to read.
