You can imagine being in Kate's shoes. Living with someone is very intimate and you are at the mercy of someone else so to find out they aren't who they say they are and in fact could be something dark and negative could be exceptionally scary particularly if they are bigger and stronger than you.
This isn't a new idea, we have seen a couple of other stories with the same plot and the cover I think is very dull but it's well written and could be very interesting and thrilling read
