Kate is a super recogniser. She was born with the ability to remember a face forever. Kate used her natural gift, which is more accurate than any computer, to work for the police where she helped put away criminals and helped save lives. However one day she was involved in a horrendous car crash which affected her ability to recognise faces. During her recovery in the hospital she found love. Rob, a tech entrepreneur, held a charity art exhibition at the hospital and was enamoured by Kate. Rob nursed Kate back to health in his Cornwall home and their love blossomed. After a few months Kate looks at Rob and feels like she's looking at a stranger. Rob is not the man she fell in love with. He has been replaced by an imposter.
I was extremely impressed by the research done by the author on super recognisers. This is something I'd never heard of before reading this book, so I found this story truly fascinating. The story is written in multiple perspectives so we also get to see the story from the perspective of Jake, Kate's ex, and from Silas, whom Kate used to work for. Not only was this plot fascinating, the story takes you on a journey full of twists and turns and leaves you wondering just who has replaced Rob, what really happened to Kate before the car accident and whether her abilities will return. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of modern technology and of the doppleganger theory. I would recommend this story to readers who like a bit of mystery, crime and plenty of twists and turns to get through.
