Better as the plot thickens

Whilst it took me until about half way through the book to get truly into it, by the end I was absolutely hooked.

The two perspectives of Isla and Freya combined with the jumpy time line between chapters could have been confusing but instead worked perfectly for the story(ies) being told.

I loved how the book tackled the very real presence of the #MeToo movement and issues of sexual assault across both the main characters and it was vindicating to see, in Freya's case, justice being dealt on that regards. Additionally, in that same vein of plot, I loved the way in which the end saw the remaining female characters build up something new from this situation.

However, I can't help but feel a bitter edge of disappointment at the end of the book as the final chapter reveals the genuine truth to Nicole's murder. Whilst having Kate take the fall for Freya made sense and whilst Freya's motives were understandable the fact that she is now going on in life unpunished for her crime feels wrong. Especially considering the justice faced by every other character.

In contrast though, I loved Islam's story the most. Partly because I also want to enter journalism and I admire her determination to see the case/story through but also because she was a likeable and interesting character with her own issues amongst this nif unravelling story of the Atypical company.

All in all, the Pact was a well-written twisty novel with an ever thickening plot and Amy Heydenrych certainly has talent in making all of her characters complex and realistic.
