This is just so intruiging. So many little nuggets are already left for the reader. What has Leah done in her past? Who has been killed? And certainly, does Emmy even exist.

As readers we want to accept Leah's version of events but can we? The writer plants doubt from the beginning and this adds to our mounting sense of tension. Her actions at times suggest someone used to lying. Can we trust her?

The setting of the house adds to the mystery. The writer has created a mundane backdrop which is also eerie. The description of this impersonal space is rather bleak but there is enough to hint at a house which is also means vulnerability rather than protection for Leah and Emmy.

Then there's Emmy herself who mirrors Leah physically in her past. She is both sensible and yet reckless.

I found this a fascinating opening. The style of writing is immediately engaging. This is certainly one to get you thinking.
