Leah is an ex journalist who has been sacked for, apparently, falsifying a story which leads to the accused's suicide. When old friend Emmy offers her an escape from Boston and the chance to start again she grabs it. However, is Emmy what she seems.
When a girl is murdered (who bears a striking resemblance to Leah) and Emmy disappears she suddenly realises she knows very little about her friend.
The local cop investigates her disappearance only to discover that what Leah thought she knew is actually an elaborate tale full of smoke and mirrors. There is no trace of Emmy at any of the places where she says she has lived/worked. When Emmy's boyfriend suddenly turns up dead the evidence starts to point towards Leah and she's in the position of having to untangle all the lies to exonerate herself.
It's an interesting concept and should make for a real page turner of a read. Ultimately though I just found it overly confusing with too much jumping back and forwards between the present day and events of the past. It lacked coherency for me and although the last couple of chapters essentially recap the entire tale from start to end I still felt a bit baffled by it.
