The premise of this sounded very promising, haven't seen the best friend for days then a woman is assaulted and left for dead near the lake - a woman who looks remarkable like the main character. Was the best friend involved? Or are they another victim?

There are plenty of plot twists and red herrings along the way, maybe spending too long on one particular red herring that made it a bit too obvious to me that it was never going to be the answer. However it did make me properly begin to question whether the best friend was a real person or just some figment of the imagination of the main character, had she had some sort of mental break and this Emmy character was just a manifestation she had invented to cope? It was certainly leaning that way, and i was a little disappointed with the final reveal as a result as it was all a bit too normal in comparison.

I found it a bit of a chore in the middle of the book due to it jumping back and forward explaining why she ended up in the small town as a teacher, having to leave her old journalism life behind but it certainly picked up pace at the end as the real reveal happened. It maybe dwelt on that a bit too much for me and i found the proper ending a little abrupt, but that was just my opinion.
