The enigmatic characters of flawed Sophie and Charlie with the secrets together with the interesting blurb for this book definitely piqued my interest.
The opening chapter where we are taken back to the late 80s hints at a young boy so traumatised by his upbringing that he kills his own mother in an arson attack.
His habit of imprisoning, and ultimately killing, small birds is often looked upon as the beginning of escalating behaviour when commenting on serial killers; so we are being led to believe that he grew up to be the perpetrator of the murder Charlie is accused off; and/or possibly others,such as Sophie's brother.
Of course, the boy could also be the young Charlie (or both!)
I'm eager to find out more about what makes the perfect couple Charlie & Emily not so perfect, and to learn more about Sophie; who, for all her obvious flaws, seems like she is going to be one of the good guys.
