Being Scottish i was instantly drawn to this being set in Edinburgh. The places mentioned may be old but a lot of them are still there today. It is intriguing reading about life back in that time. This extract was one of the longer ones we have been treated to but the pages flew by it was so well written.
The cover itself would have instantly drawn me to the book in a bookshop, so much going on, much as the simple words on the cover - each enticing more than the last. I very much can't wait to find out what happens next with these characters, the pharmacist seems extremely unlikeable so i hope he gets his comeuppance and the wife finds some happyness, and the maid finishes learning to read. Hopefully the maid learning to read has some part to play.
