This book was brilliant at exploring the drug infused Victorian period. I felt uncomfortable throughout, especially for the female characters.

Rebecca Palmer marries a man who decides to open a pharmacy. Set in Edinburgh, Rebecca believes she’s marrying into a honourable family. She couldn’t be more wrong...

Her husband is very different behind closed doors, full of repressed sexual desire and fetishes. When she airs her suspicions, he drugs her, claiming to pacify her hysteria.

As the novel progresses, Rebecca’s journey to the depths of addiction worsens. Until she reaches a climatic point...

This book is well written and really well developed. I’m pleased we got the ending (no spoilers!!) we did. It only seemed fair anyway.

Regardless, this was a good little read. Slightly uncomfortable at times and very unnerving. I guess that’s a good thing!
