This book caught my attention because of its stunning cover and fascinating plot. Set in Victorian Edinburgh, Rebecca’s husband uses her as his test subject for his drug: heroin.
This novel explores the abusive relationship between the two which made me feel unsettled, but as the writing had intended to do so.
It was an incredibly atmospheric read, with a dark and omniscient undercurrent. I enjoyed the historical element and being transported to an era I’m incredible fascinated by.
However, although I enjoyed the first 100 pages thoroughly, I did feel it began to drag on and I found myself tredging through the remnants of the novel. The ending left me feeling unsatisfied and I had wished for something more lasting and impactful.
