I actually really enjoyed this book and read it in two days, I found that once started I could hardly put it down.

The characters and times were brought to life by Vanessa Tait and you could picture Victorian Edinburgh with its busy, dirty streets. I enjoyed the descriptions of the pharmacy and could imagine the bottles of potions lined up on the shelves, with Mr Palmer dispensing to his patrons.

You could feel the hopefulness of Rebecca when she tries to seduce her own husband and her despair as she realises the truth about him and about her own situation, it really highlighted the plight of women at that time.

The descriptions of heroin addiction were very harrowing and Mr Palmer's aptly named friend very sinister.

This book was defintiely entertaining, if not entirely convincing.
