This novel was excellent at exploring the Victorian era infused with drugs. I felt insecure all over, particularly with the female characters.
Rebecca Palmer is getting married to a man who decides to start a pharmacy. Set in Edinburgh, Rebecca assumes she's being married to an honourable family. She couldn't be mistaken any more ...
She hopes to enjoy the life of a well-heeled gentlewoman as Rebecca Palmer's new husband opens a pharmacy in Victorian Edinburgh. But when she learns her husband is not what he seems, her ideal transforms to ashes. Alexander attempts to pacify her so-called madness with a miraculous new chemical invention, as Rebecca struggles to preserve her integrity in the face of his infidelity and peculiar sexual impulses. He considers heroin a wonder-drug.This book is written beautifully and built very well. I 'm glad that we had the ending (no spoilers!!) that we had. It seemed only fair anyway.

Regardless, it was a fun little reading. Often it is slightly unpleasant and very unnerving. That's a good thing I think!
