As I began reading, In my head I was transported to the streets of the Black Country Living museum.
I felt like I was learning about the culture and day to day living if years ago, as well as slotting into the lives of Rebecca, her best friend maid Jenny and the men trying to make her life more complicated.
Sexual abuse, drug addiction, death, brothels, trickery, unusual fetishises, disappearances....the plot developed nicely with plenty of unexpected twists and turns, in fitting with the time period.
There was a chunk in the middle that dragged a little, but overall, I couldn't put it down.
I felt really sorry for Rebecca who was being used as a guinea pig for her husbands drug experiments and was so glad when her childhood sweetheart came out of the woodwork. Fab read!
