It is in Edinburgh in 1869 where we meet Rebecca who has managed to dirty her shoes in the short distance she walked from the carriage to the new pharmacy's grand opening.

We assume that Rebecca and her husband Alexander are well off as they have a maid who offered to use a handkerchief to clean the offending shoes.

Alexander is not well pleased that the shoes have been stained and he is most disapproving of Rebecca.

Things get even more strained when one of the first into the new pharmacy is a down at heel but beautiful woman called Evangeline who clearly knows Alexander and talks with him and Rebecca is ushered away and out of the pharmacy on what was to be a very important day for them both.

I've already taken a liking to Rebecca and a dislike to Alexander and look forward to reading how their marriage fares, though I fear the worst.
