The Pharmacist’s Wife is the extraordinary tale of Rebecca's journey through; her past, love and addiction. Whilst opening his new pharmacy in Edinburgh her husband Alexander makes a new creation. A wonder drug to cure all. His path soon turns from academic ambition to passion and death. Set in Victorian Scotland The Pharmacist's Wife is a gripping tale about female empowerment. It is Vanessa Taits second book and is a good read.

My favourite character was Jenny, she was a simple sweet person who was truly believable. I loved following her story through the book even when it was heartbreaking. I did find that the characters had overly emphasised traits leading to a loss in realism but some, like Jenny, were so simple and pure that it helped the book come to life. The story was mainly predictable but near the end I was taken by surprise which was very fun. My favorite part of the book was when all the revelations started coming out, some of them took me by surprise and it was enjoyable to see the flaws in the so thought perfectionist characters. The book never made me laugh or cry but it certainly had me wishing and hoping for the success of certain characters.

I did find the book very hard to get into and spent a long time not really reading it. I was put off by some certain events but I realise now that they were needed. I found Alexandra's character cringe at times and although I enjoyed it I probably wouldn’t recommend it. It was worth reading, I found it different from what I expected but it wasn’t bad.
