Alaina Hixon was walking home when she encountered an old guy who offers her a lift and after she gets into his car, things change and she disappears.

Kristy is a journalist who comes to Alaina’s town to investigate her disappearance.

Coincidentally, Kristy’s ex husband, Nolan Moore also comes to the town to film for a tv programme he makes which tackles unsolved mysteries. The town is surrounded by low, spiralling stone walls, which they think would be a good subject to investigate and make a documentary about.

The town, Birchlake, is not a friendly place to be and both Kristy and Nolan and his team are met with distrust and suspicion.

The tension builds with strange happenings, like Kristy’s phone moving from where she left it before she went to bed and the film crew also encountering unexplained things, like strange noises and glimpses of someone in the room, when there’s no one there.

Some very believable characters in the book and I enjoyed finding out more about them as the story progressed.

Most of the book is really gripping with lots of creepy things happening and then towards the end of the book, it descends into a study into the paranormal which I found let the book down and while I could believe in bumps in the night and unexplained sightings of an old man, it all got to be a complete stretch of the imagination and though some readers might find all these things very frightening, I just found them totally unbelievable.
