I honestly don't know how I feel about this book, it was a real slog to read. I can't actually decide whether I enjoyed it or not....it isn't written badly (apart from the author's annoying habit of dropping the first part of expletive sentences e.g. dropping "What the" from "What the **** is going on?"). I just think maybe it could've been shorter, less wordy in places, and a bit more coherent at times.
There are a couple of main strands to the story, which are interconnected by the fact that the two main characters are ex husband and wife. Kristy is a journalist, who is researching an article on cyber bullying which leads her to visit the small town of Birchlake. She is looking into the disappearance of a 14 year old girl from the area, and from her online research thinks it may be relevant to her article.
Her ex, Nolan, hosts a YouTube show called The Anomaly Files, and chooses to visit the area to make a show on the mysterious walls in the region. Nolan and his production team (Ken, Molly and Pierre) roll in to town shortly after Kristy arrives.
I won't cover any more of the plot, because to try and describe what happens will just be spoiler after spoiler....suffice to say that all is not as it seems and there are plenty of mysterious goings on.
The book is split into 3 parts and by the end - in fact, for most of Part 3 - there is far too much going on in the story and it jumps around from chapter to chapter, incoherently. People are in more than one place at the same time, both physically and via their imaginations, and it all gets a bit messy.
Throughout there are also references to Nolan's previous adventures, from the previous book, The Anomaly - I haven't read this book so I felt there were gaps in the backstory. Also, billing the book 'For fans of Stephen King' is probably setting expectations way too high...
