I read Rutger's previous book, The Anomaly, last year, so was excited to get the chance to read this sequel. Firstly, this book isn't really a sequel in the fact that the characters only hint about their last trip (they refer to it as "what happened in the Grand Canyon" or "the caves"), so no spoilers there if you haven't read the first book.

This book is focussed on Nolan, a presenter of a show that investigates paranormal events and/or mysteries. He and his team go to Birchlake, a small town in California to study some strange dry stone walls. Nolan's ex-wife, Kristy, is already in town looking into the disappearance of a teenage girl. Of course they meet up and the stories become entwined.

As expected, there are peculiar and sometimes creepy things happening as soon as they arrive in town. The disappearance of Alaina isn't all it seems and the town itself becomes more and more hostile to Nolan and the group.

Apart from the ending which I felt went on a bit too long, I really enjoyed this book. I particularly like the characters of Nolan and Ken, his producer, who are very well written. These books are crying out to become TV mini-series and I am already looking forward to the next one.
