I enjoyed reading this book about May Moon- The Punch and Judy Girl- which is set in 1920-1930s England.
May and her sister Pomona were brought up by their father after their Spanish mother abandoned them and returned to Spain to further her career as a flamenco dancer. After her father’s death, May continues her fathers business as a Punch and Judy professor for one season, where she makes friends with other entertainers at the end of the pier show.
In this book, Sheila Newberry has written a love story but with references to the social history of the time - the surplus women caused by The Great War, suffragettes, the Depression, the Spanish Civil War, King Edward’s abdication etc
This book was so straightforward and easy to read- a refreshing change from all the psychological thrillers I have been reading lately!
