I believe that going to a girl's school in my teens (not wholly unlike the anarchy of St Trinian's!) fostered in me a voracious need to read and champion rebel girl stories. Stories where women are allowed to come of age indelicately and their voices are not silenced in favour of their male counterparts. This theme feels at the core of what Talulah Riley is exploring in The Quickening, and the first impression already showcases a bold narrative voice in our protagonist and I am excited to see what happens next. After loving stories like The Handmaid's Tale and Sophie Mackintosh's The Water Cure, I would love to slake my continuing thirst for thought provoking feminist dystopia.
