The first look held so much promise of a 1984 meets Handmaid's Tale style dystopian fiction. For me, it fell really flat and I found it quite a challenge to get to the end but did as I'd been given this opportunity to review a pre-release copy. I felt far too much of the book was given over to setting the scene and a lot of telling rather than showing of the new setup of the world. Very little character development and when something finally did happen it was all over and brushed under the carpet within 100 pages. None of the characters seemed to know why they were acting in the ways they did and the ending was unsatisfactory as a result, leaving some loose ends not tied up or too quickly moved on. My experience is entirely subjective but it just really wasn't for me and I was really disappointed by that, the whole reading experience left me feeling uncomfortable.
