The quickening follows a group of mostly female university friends who believe the patriarchal system is not fit for purpose. We follow the change in the system, which is referred to as ‘the quickening’, from two differing people’s perspective both in the past and present. We also see how this extremist feminist approach not only puts women in charge but also limits the rights of men.

I really enjoyed the exploration of an extremist feminist matriarchal world, where aspects in society are taken to such extremes it would be considered to be dystopian and no longer feminist but an extremist dictatorship. Such as men either being sold to fight foreign wars, put into work camps to undertake manual labour, turned into eunuchs, or kept like pets if they were pretty and mild enough.

At most points I wasn’t sure where the story was going, and this kept me on my toes. There are twist and turns and a sense of unknowing, even when you think you may know. There is a quick and dramatic ending which I feel adds well to the overall extremist and unexpected aspects of the book.
