After reading a preview of this book I was excited to finally get a copy and read it, until I read it. I was sorely disappointed, especially as the initial preview held such promise. The way the story is written it alternates between two main characters, Art and Victoria, telling a chapter at a time. It also flicks between the current dystopian state and pre the Big Change. The way it is written I found easy to read and it flowed very well, each chapter beginning with a quote from the manifesto; The Quickening. What I found most disappointing was that the “story” spent so much time explaining the rules and etiquette of the current state at the detriment of a proper story. The main characters backgrounds were covered very well but the interaction and development of their progression was very limited. The premise and idea of the book was good but did not grow and this felt very much like a debut novel ( it wasn’t) The bright cover was appealing but the centre image was familiar, I am sure I have seen it on another novel.
