I was so looking forward to this book. I love dystopian narratives as they really make you question the world. And to some extent this book delivered.

The Quickening is a story of a new order where women are supreme and men are subjugated. Dana is the mistress of this world and convinced it in university with a group of friends.

Arthur met Dana at university and was besotted with her.

What follows is an interesting and quite gripping tale. However somehow this book didn’t make the mark for me of a great dystopian novel.

The book is told from Arthur and Victoria’s point of views. Which I never quite understood as surely writing from Dana’s view point would make more sense? There are enough twists to keep making you think it makes sense but by the end I wasn’t convinced.

The imagery is good and the new world order is well thought out, however we don’t really understand the motivation behind the details of the new reality. Nor do we really know how Dana managed to turn the Labour Party into a zealous woman only party!

The ending for me made no sense. Having not been party to Dana’s POV it was hard to see whether she felt the ending was truly benevolent or whether it was a further way to get revenge!

I wanted to know more about Dana and what motivated her to make a society that doesn’t make women equal but subjugates men and so becomes as corrupt as the patriarchy.

I think what is missing is Dana’s motivation and we also don’t find out what happens to Victoria.
