Unfortunately, I feel like this is just another attempt to capitalise on the whole YA dystopian trend, although I wouldn't strictly class this as YA. The premise is essentially a society where men are second class citizens, or de-gendered, and women are in charge of everything. Men aren't even allowed to read, or leave the house without permission. This book was at least easy to read and at times engaging, but honestly it read as very anti-feminist to me. The ending felt rushed, and it just didn't do enough to give the characters depth, to understand the history around this huge societal shift, or even to explain what The Quickening actually was! It seems very unrealistic even for an alternate reality! I also didn't care enough about the characters to really be shocked by any twists. Overall, for someone who was a real fan of the concept, and of the wider genre, this was a really disappointing read.
