I appreciate the concept of this book and what it is trying to do, but I personally found the execution lacking. Our first point of view from a young man feels hollow. There is an interaction with enigmatic Dana which feels like it was meant to be mysterious but comes off as unrealistic and brittle. The dialogue could have benefitted from being more organic instead of dumping exposition and foreshadowing on me.

The second point of view did not grab me. The writing style is not for me, and I found myself having to reread sections I was skimming from a lack of engagement.

Finally, I appreciate that by flipping to a matriarchal dystopia is trying to shine a light on issue of gender equity and justice in our society, but it’s real disturbing to read the sentence ‘It is easy to kill a woman’ in the first 20 pages. Not as cute or and deep as the author probably intended here, just real creepy.

Interesting concept, poorly executed. I do not want to read more and I don’t think it is worth your time.
