I loved this fascinating opening - I couldn't stop reading; were we in a prison camp? Was this an alternative history where concentration camps were built in Britain? Was it the narrator's perception which made a strict work environment into a brutal one? At last we are told the camp's Polish name and all becomes clear - this is the second world war and this is a very real fight to survive. The narrator's self awareness and the readers' hindsight combine to create a tension about what is the right thing to do, what is the way to survive and what might happen. I cannot wait to find out!
