I was drawn in by the cover and title but somehow, it wasn't quite what I expected or perhaps wanted.

Its a wonderful, beautiful tale that follows Ella through a heartbreaking tragedy, and it is wonderfully done, brought to life with a believable cast, who keep it all in perspective. Every event and word deserve to be there, keeping the plot flowing at exactly the right tempo. I like the charcaters with the would-been and could-beens, they make you think, and I'm a sucker for anything that isn't blatantly black and white but all the shades of colour inbetween. Thats what this novel is. Its best appreciated if you like historical fiction.

But not quite my taste. I was gripped enough to read it in one sitting but by the end I just needed to know what happened. I didn't feel invested enough in the story. However I would still recommend this to others
